Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay discovered her love for art through her grandmother Denise. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, allowed her to explore art and literature as well as the theatre in daylight. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay learnt by doing that art can be a powerful instrument for activism. DuVernay learned to be socially conscious by her mother. DuVernay lived in Compton for most of her childhood, but she would spend every summer with the extended family of her father located in Lowndes County Alabama. DuVernay's father remembered watching the Civil Rights movement's historic march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama was later the inspiration to write a script for a film based on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Civil Rights Movement. In the year 1990, DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Following graduation, she attended the University of California Los Angeles where she earned qualifications in English and African American studies. DuVernay was in college when she became interested in production for broadcast journalism. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was appointed to monitor and investigate the residence for a specific juror. Following her disappointment with journalistic work by the assignments she was assigned she decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay got a job right after college as a publicist in the young age of a studio. She started The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999.
